How to read the chart

Find your hand down the left side and the dealer’s upcard across the top. Hard totals are hands without an ace counted as 11. Soft hands contain an ace counted as 11, like ace-6. Pairs are your first two cards when they match.

“Double, else hit” means double your bet if the rules let you, otherwise take a normal hit. “Double, else stand” is the same but you stand when you can’t double. You can usually double only on your first two cards.

The rule that changes the most plays is whether the dealer hits soft 17. It’s printed on the felt, right under the blackjack payout.
